Bugs of LA: The Leaf-Footed Bug!

Meet the leaf-footed bug! This Los Angeles native insect was spotted by Dave and sent in for identification.

Leaf-footed bugs are members of the order Hemiptera, also known as true bugs. They have piercing and sucking mouthparts for feeding on plants. While we call many different creatures “bugs,” these special mouthparts make true bugs unique.

One way to identify leaf-footed bugs is by looking at the last pair of legs, nearest the abdomen (rear end). These legs are thicker than the others and often have spines.
