Bug of the Week - Cheesecake!

Tarantula in her enclosure

Meet Cheesecake! She’s a stripe knee tarantula, also known as a zebra leg tarantula. If you take a look at the coloration on her legs, you might be able to see the resemblance to a stripey zebra. This stunning species comes from Costa Rica and some other parts of Central America.

Like other spiders, Cheesecake loves to eat bugs! Crickets are her favorite, and she is an impressive hunter. She pounces on any cricket she sees and she sometimes has a gross eating habit - she mashes her crickets into a ball and carries them around to save for later!

Like all tarantulas, Cheesecake is venomous! This means her hollow fangs inject a toxic liquid into the bugs she eats. Her bite isn’t dangerous to people, only bugs. Even though she doesn’t try to bite anyone, we treat Cheesecake with lots of respect.

You can meet Cheesecake and other cool creatures at our exciting bug parties for kids!
