Bug of the Week - Budwing Mantis

Meet this week’s featured bug, the budwing praying mantis! This predatory insect comes from East Africa. Like other mantis species, she loves eating insects like fruit flies. She grabs them in a split second with her specially shaped front legs and digs in!

The name “budwing” comes from the female mantis has short stubby wings that look like the buds of plants.

She makes sure to keep clean, using her mouthparts to clean her spiky front legs after catching flies.

Praying mantises also have great vision compared to many other insects. They can see in 3D, making it easy for them to target their tiny prey.

Meet the budwing mantis and other cool bugs at one of our insect parties for kids!
