Bug of the Week - Blue Death Feigning Beetles

Meet our blue death feigning beetles! These bugs are a type of darkling beetle, but they have a blue appearance instead of black. The blue color comes from a substance that these beetles use like sunscreen! They live out in the desert of the Southwest US, so they need protection from the intense sun.

We think these beetles look just like frozen blueberries! Our blue beetles are named Blueberry Muffin, Blueberry Danish, and Blueberry Pie.

When they get scared, these insects flip onto their backs and play dead! They can stay perfectly still for hours at a time, fooling predators into leaving them alone.

Since they live out in the dry desert, they never drink water! Instead, they get the water they need from fruits and vegetables.
