Bug of the Week - Pistachio

Meet Pistachio, our cryptic mantis! This species comes from South Africa and looks just like a green leaf on a twig. Pistachio also sways back and forth to make her seem even more like a leaf blowing in the wind! This camouflage helps mantises hide to catch the flies they like to eat.

Her two front legs are thicker and spinier than the others. These are used to grab her prey! She has good vision and can see in 3D to pinpoint the location of a fly.

Pistachio is one of the unique insects you can meet at our insect parties for kids!
