Bug of the Week - Hot Mustard

Meet Hot Mustard, our desert hairy scorpion! This species comes from the deserts of the Southwest United States. We’ve been lucky enough to see these guys in the wild too! Like other scorpions, they glow under UV light. With our UV flashlights, it’s easy to spot these guys at night.

Our own desert hairy glows too! No one knows why scorpions do this. Their exoskeleton continues to glow even after death. The empty shed exoskeleton even glows after molting!

Like other scorpions, Hot Mustard enjoys eating bugs! Crickets are his favorite, although he enjoys dubia roaches from time to time. He uses his pincers and venomous stinger to catch and kill prey. While he is a fearsome predator to small insects, he’s harmless to humans.

You can meet Hot Mustard and other cool bugs at one of our insect parties for kids!
